Sulu State University (SuluSU) marked another significant milestone in advancing research and innovation with the groundbreaking ceremony for its Halal Research Center on July 19, 2026, signaling the University's commitment to strengthening Halal research, product development, and innovation in the Bangsamoro region.

The program commenced with an invocation led by Mr. Athram Igasan, followed by the opening remarks of University President Prof. Charisma S. Ututalum, CESE, who underscored the University's vision of becoming a premier institution for research, innovation, and sustainable development. She emphasized that the establishment of the Halal Research Center reflects SuluSU's dedication to addressing the growing demand for Halal-compliant research and services while fostering socio-economic development in the region.

The ceremony was graced by the Guest of Honor, Hon. Leah Primitiva P. Paquiz, PhD, Chairperson of the Professional Regulation Commission – Board of Nursing, who was formally introduced before delivering her inspirational message. A distinguished educator and steadfast advocate of excellence in nursing education, Dr. Paquiz commended Sulu State University for its unwavering commitment to academic excellence and its forward-looking initiatives that contribute to regional and national development.

A brief presentation of the project highlighted the scope and significance of the SuluSU Halal Research Center, a modern two-storey facility measuring 13.77 meters in width and 65 meters in length. The project carries a contract amount of ₱47,473,094.73, funded through the General Appropriations Act (GAA) under Capital Outlay, with a total allocation of ₱50,000,000.00.

Construction will be undertaken by CLA Construction Incorporated, headed by Engr. Ronie A. Amalia, with a project duration of 420 calendar days, commencing on July 19, 2026, and targeted for completion on September 12, 2027.

Once completed, the Halal Research Center will serve as a premier hub for research, innovation, product development, and Halal certification initiatives, further strengthening the University's role in promoting scientific advancement and supporting the Halal industry. The facility will operate under the leadership of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Innovation, and Production (OVREIP) headed by Dr. Ayesha Rema A. Tan.

The highlight of the event was the groundbreaking ceremony, where University officials, honored guests, project partners, and stakeholders ceremonially broke ground to signify the official commencement of construction. The ceremony concluded with a photo opportunity followed by a fellowship luncheon held at the University's New Administration Building, celebrating another landmark achievement in Sulu State University's continuing pursuit of academic excellence, innovation, and inclusive development.
